WHO WAS JOHN MERCER?
John Mercer (21 February 1791 – 30 November 1866) was born in Great Harnwood, Lancashire. His father died in his early childhood. To help his widowed mother, John went to work for a hand loom weaver and in a few years became a weaver himself.
WHAT DID HE DO?
John Mercer discovered a process very important to the textile industry. He was self-taught, without technical education and relied on indomitable energy and perseverance to leave behind a name that will be known and revered.
John Mercer developed mercerization, a process for treating cotton. Patented in 1850 and is used extensively today. John Mercer was admitted to the Royal Society, the Philosophical Society and the Chemical Society.
